The theme African Gods and Goddesses is a night of dispelling fearful myths about African Spirituality and Folklore through Poetry.
Africa is rich with beautiful culture and heritage that includes a heavily ignored connection to the creator found in the various creation stories across the continent. From vodun in Benin, Ifa in Yoruba to the Laws of Maat from ancient Egypt, these wildly misunderstood practices have survived 1000s of years.
We will be hearing poetry on the night that challenges these misconceptions and offers an opportunity to learn the realities of such practices outside of what has been portrayed in Hollywood as fearful and demonic. For example, in Haiti, Cecile Fatiman and Dutty Bookman used ancient practices before the revolution took place. Would they have won without these African rituals? Why are we so misaligned to our ancestors practices and traditions?
For this edition of African Gods and Goddesses, Stella B and Nat Nye the Lyrical Alkhemist also welcome Special Guests Adeche Atelier Adwoa and Solomon, from 6 to 7pm, to talk through their works to date, their plans for the evening’s live art take over and merch is available to buy. This will be followed by Welcome and poetry from Africa Centre's CEO Olu Alake, Poetry Open Mic and Spoken Word Performances.
